Budva

2,500-year-old Budva was the former Yugoslavia’s most popular beach resort. Today it is Montenegro’s most popular beach resort, with miles of Dalmatian Coast beaches and beautiful red-roofed buildings. An early Roman city, Budva was part of the city-state of Venice during the 15th century. Its walled Old Town, damaged by several earthquakes in 1979, has been carefully restored.

Podgorica

Devastated during World War II by over 70 bombing raids and later by the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Podgorica, the largest city in Montenegro, has recovered and reinvented itself as an energetic capital city, home to the National Theater, various art galleries, the Natural History Museum and the University of Montenegro. Podgorica is situated at the crossroads of the Moraca and Ribnica rivers and only nine miles from Lake Skadar, and the abundance of water in the region is one of the central reasons a large city developed here. Architecturally, the city is a mixture of influences from block-like Soviet style buildings to its most modern feature, the Millennium Bridge, one of the more distinctive structures in its skyline.

Kotor

The natural harbor of Kotor Bay on the Adriatic coast was a significant commercial and artistic center in the Middle Ages.  The town of Kotor, seated at the farthest end of the meandering bay, is guarded by bastions and fortress walls dating from Illyrian and Roman times.  The area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Cetinja

Founded in the 15th century as the capital of what later became Montenegro, Cetinja became the home of the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitan as well. Its earliest monastery was destroyed by the Turks in 1692, and today’s “New Cetinja Monastery” was begun in 1701. Montenegrin education and culture were nurtured here. Admire the 19th century royal residence, Biljarda, or Billiard House, built in the style of a medieval castle.

Mimosa Festival, Herceg Novi (Spring)

Montenegro beach

The popular Mimosa Festival is held yearly to welcome spring and begins after the blossoming of the first flower of spring, the yellow mimosa. Theater pieces, musical performances and fine art exhibitions are held to mark the festival, and “majorettes” laden with mimosa are driven from town to town.
