"Excellent scheduling and management. Unexpected comfort in the deluxe compartment and surprisingly good food & wine. Loved the train itself and the rail trip. I don't know how it could have been done better."

Roll from Vladivostok, burgeoning Pacific Rim port city, up and over the northern tip of Lake Baikal on the Baikal Amur Mainline (BAM) line that runs through remote stretches of snowy taiga and frozen tundra. Pause in isolated little villages that cling to the lifeline of the BAM before you re-join the main line, powering across the Urals and down into a wintry Moscow.
Days 1-2: Vladivostok
Spend one night in Vladivostok's leading hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner. A city tour includes the major attractions of this once off-limits Russian town. Afternoon departure of the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express.
Day 3: Komsomolsk
Arrive in Komsomolsk, planned and built in 1932 as a secret center for military industries. The train joins the BAM and heads westwards through some of Siberia's most remote and scenic territory.
Days 4-5: Aboard Train, Tynda
Stop in Tynda and pay a visit to the local BAM Museum. Seated at the crossroads of the BAM and a branch of the main Trans-Siberian line, Tynda's life is tied to the railroad.
Day 6: Novaya Chara
The village of Novaya Chara is known to gemologists as the namesake of the purple gemstone called charoite, and the only region in the world where it can be found
Day 7: Severomuysk, Severobaikalsk
The train passes through the nine-mile Severomuysk tunnel and arrives in remote Severobaikalsk, which began in 1974 as a base camp for construction of the BAM. The town was little more than a collection of tents, cabins and railroad cars at first.
Day 8: Bratsk
1636, Cossacks intent on collecting tribute from the resident Buryats built a fort at Bratsk. The town remained a small provincial place with about 2,000 people until 1954, when the massive Bratsk dam project was begun.
Days 9-10: Aboard the train, Novosibirsk
The train climbs through the spectacular Sayan Mountains. Stop at Seyatel to visit the West Siberian Railway Museum before continuing into Novosibirsk to explore the enormous Opera House, Lenin Square and the Ob River, which flows 3,500 miles from its source to the Arctic.
Days 11-12: Ekaterinberg, Kazan
Ekaterinburg is where the last czar, Nicholas II, was executed in July of 1918. We cross the Europe/Asia divide shortly after departure. Spend the day in Kazan, the beautiful capital of Tartarstan on the Volga. Enjoy a final dinner onboard the train as it heads for Moscow.
Days 13-14: Moscow
Tour the classic sights of this 850-year-old capital city, including expansive Red Square and the venerable Kremlin. Transfer to a five star hotel for the final night, with a farewell reception and dinner.
