Caucasian Explorer by Private Train
Roll through the gorgeous South Caucasus countries of
Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan as well as the czarist-cum-
Soviet mineral water health resorts of southern Russia on the
luxurious Golden Eagle private train.
Days 1-3: Yerevan, Lake Sevan
Discover Armenia's capital, visiting the
iconic Cascade, a massive white staircase and waterfall. Depart aboard the luxury
Golden Eagle private train, traveling along the shore of blue-green Lake Sevan.
Days 4-5: Tbilisi
Tour the red-roofed Old Town of Georgia's capital, its
houses sporting traditional carved wooden balconies. Visit David Gareja cave
monastery, one of the country's most sacred sites.
Days 6-8: Kutaisi, Gori, Uplistsikhe, Mtskheta, Telavi
In Kutaisi,
visit UNESCO-listed Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery. Make stops at
Stalin's hometown, Gori, the cave town of Uplistsikhe, and UNESCO-listed
Mtskheta. In Telavi, center of Georgia's wine country, enjoy a wine-tasting and a
wonderful Georgian lunch.
Day 9: Baku
Arrive in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, touring its UNESCO-listed
Old Town, completely encircled by medieval city walls. Disembark for a night in a
fine Baku hotel.
Days 10-12: Mineralnye Vody, Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Taganrog,
Tanais
Take a short flight over the breathtaking Greater Caucasus Mountains to
Russia's heirloom spa region. Visit Pyatigorsk, one of Russia's oldest health resorts,
and Kislovodsk, considered the most beautiful of the mineral water towns. Pass
through Taganrog, Peter the Great's first naval base, and inspect the excavations at
Bronze Age Tanais.
Days 13-15: Rostov-on-Don, Starocherkassk, Moscow
Visit Rostov-on-Don and hop a ferry to the island village of Starocherkassk, capital of
the Don Cossacks until 1805. Arriving in Moscow, transfer to a leading hotel and
tour UNESCO-listed Red Square.
