Seize the window of opportunity to enter North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) for an unusual weeklong exploration. A country few western travelers have seen since the 1950s, the DPRK encompasses some of the finest landscapes in Asia.

Days 1-3: Beijing

Hop a pedicab for a tour of the ancient hutongs, or alleyways, and enjoy some free time to explore on your own.

Days 4-5: Pyongyang, Nampo

Begin your exploration of the DPRK in the capital, Pyongyang, paying your respects to the Great Leader and Eternal President, Kim Il-sung, whose giant statue stands on Mansudae Hill, along with his son, Kim Jong-il. Catch a glimpse of old Pyongyang at the 16th century Taedong Gate and the bronze Pyongyang Bell, cast in 1726 as an early warning system.

Days 6-7: Kaesong, DMZ

On the way to Kaesong, picnic in the lovely national park on Mt. Kuwol and visit the 14th century Tomb of King Kongmin, 31st king of the Koryo Dynasty, the namesake of Korea. Arrive in Kaesong, the ancient Koryo capital, listed by UNESCO in 2013. Explore the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, entering the Joint Security Area (JSA), the only place where guards from both Koreas face each other. Discover Panmunjom, the abandoned village in the JSA where the 1953 Armistice Agreement was signed. Survey the four houses that straddle the line of demarcation and perhaps peek inside one of them.

Days 8-11: Pyongyang, Mt. Myohyang, Beijing

Learn more about North Korea's perspective on the war at the "Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum" and board the U.S. Navy spy ship, the USS Pueblo, seized in 1968. On lush green Mt. Myohyang, visit the 11th century Pohyon Temple with its nine-story Tabo Pagoda. Return to Beijing and toast your one-of-a-kind experience at a farewell dinner.
