Essential Albania: Up, Down and Around Albania
Country cousin of Greece and Italy, little-known Albania has 225 miles of coastline, Greek and Roman ruins and vestiges of Ottoman heritage. Beginning in the capital, Tirana, travel overland up and down the Adriatic coast and through the mountains of the south.
Days 1-3: Tirana, Kruja, Shkodra, Durres, Apollonia
Visit the museums and mosques of the capital, the medieval hillside fortress of Kruja, striking lakeside Shkodra, the Roman amphitheater in coastal Durres and the ruins of Apollonia, mentioned by both Aristotle and Cicero.
Days 4-5: Vlora, Berat, Butrint, Saranda
Overnight in Vlora, an important port since the 6th century and visit UNESCO-listed medieval Berat and 6th century Butrint. Continue to coastal Saranda, within sight of Corfu.
Days 6-9: Gjirokastra, Permet, Korce, Pogradec, Elbasan, Tirana
Drive through the mountains to the UNESCO-listed Ottoman town of Gjirokastra and overnight in Permet, famed for its fiery raki. Veer east to Korce, near the Greek border and then up to Pogradec, on the shores of UNESCO-listed Lake Ohrid. On the way back to Tirana, walk the castle walls of Elbasan.
