Armenia's intricate stone khachkar crosses, the bounteous wines of Georgia and the ancient petroglyphs of Azerbaijan are icons of these three intertwined Caucasus countries, where you can experience five UNESCO masterpieces in ten days.
Days 1-4: Yerevan, day trips
Investigate the pagan Temple of Garni, with its walls of huge basalt blocks; Geghard Monastery, carved into the side of a mountain; Echmiadzin, an important place of pilgrimage for Christian Armenians; and Khor Virap with its fantastic views of Mt. Ararat. Drive to Tbilisi, stopping en route at UNESCO-listed Haghbat Monastery, founded in the 10th century.
Days 5-7: Tbilisi, day trips
Admire the 4th century Narikala Fortress looming over Tbilisi. Visit Mtskheta, capital of the early kingdom of Iberia; Gori, Stalin's hometown; and the David Gareja cave monasteries, the most sacred place in Georgia.
Days 8-10: Baku
Baku has been an oil town for centuries. Wander the medieval Old Town passing impressive mansions built by oil barons in the late 19th
century. Appreciate the bold designs of Azeri carpets at the Carpet Museum before exploring Gobustan, an important site of ancient petroglyphs discovered in the 1930s.
