Essential Siberia
Near the shores of UNESCO-listed Lake Baikal, survey the Mongolian, Cossack, Buryat and Buddhist heritage of southern Siberia, and admire its overwhelming natural beauty.
Days 1-2: Ulan Ude
Arriving in Ulan Ude in south Siberia's Buryatia, note
the world's largest Lenin head still adorning the main square. Drive outside of town
to explore the lovely Ivolginsk Datsan Buddhist monastery, and pay a visit to a village
of Old Believers to enjoy their 17th century songs.
Days 3-7: Irkutsk, Listvyanka, Lake Baikal
Take the day train to Irkutsk
and drive to Listvyanka, a village on the shores of UNESCO-listed Lake Baikal, where
you can bask in the heat of a traditional banya, a Russian bath house. Visit the Baikal
Museum and enjoy a boat ride on the clear waters of the oldest and deepest lake in the world. On the way back to Irkutsk, tour the open-air museum of authentic houses and community buildings from early times. Explore the Irkutsk neighborhood of original wooden buildings, decorated with the
lacy wooden fretwork typical of Siberian architecture, and learn about
Siberian cultures at the Regional History Museum.
