Days 1-3: UlaanBaatar, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park
In UlaanBaatar, capital of Mongolia, visit the National History Museum, the Bogd Khaan Winter Palace, the Gandan Buddhist Monastery and the city's main square. Spend a night in a ger in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, an alpine landscape of grassland and small pines dotted with grazing livestock.
Days 4-5: Ulan Ude
Returning to UlaanBaatar, hop a flight to Ulan Ude in south Siberia. Take a walking tour of the city’s original merchant center, noting the world’s largest Lenin head adorning the main square. Drive outside of town to explore the Ivolginsk Datsan Buddhist monastery, the center of Buddhism in Russia.
Days 6-9: Irkutsk, Listvyanka, Lake Baikal
Take the day train to Irkutsk and drive to Listvyanka, a village on the shores of UNESCO-listed Lake Baikal. Visit the Baikal Museum before enjoying a boat ride on the clear waters of the oldest and deepest lake in the world. On the drive back to Irkutsk, tour a collection of authentic houses and community
buildings from the 17th to the early 20th century.
