Follow the trail of Genghis Khan by train, on tracks connecting China, Mongolia and Russia. Board the historic Trans-Siberian railroad for the panoramic journey between Lake Baikal and Moscow. Join local travelers on regularly scheduled trains over a dramatic and variegated route that offers limitless opportunities to meet the diverse local people - Chinese, Mongol, Buryat and Russian.
Days 1-2: Beijing
In Beijing, visit Tiananmen Square, walk the Great Wall and explore the maze-like Imperial Palace, known to Westerners as the Forbidden City.
Days 3-7: Aboard Train, UlaanBaatar, Terelj
Boarding the Trans-Mongolian Railway, we roll northwest, passing remnants of the Great Wall. As we journey further into Mongolia, the cultivated fields of China give way to grasslands and then desert. Visit the impressive museums of the capital, UlaanBaatar, and explore the Mandshir Monastery sheltered in the Bogdkhan Mountain Reserve. Travel overland across the steppe to Terelj National Park, where we sleep in a traditional nomadic ger camp and perhaps sample Mongolian airag, fermented mare's milk.
Days 8-12: Ulan Ude, Lake Baikal, Irkutsk
Crossing by rail into Buryatia, Russia, visit native Buryat villages between the Mongolian border and Ulan Ude. Board a boat at Lake Baikal and trace the shoreline, spending the night in a rustic Siberian lodge. Travel the scenic Circumbaikal Railway route to Siberia’s “capital,” Irkutsk, and enjoy a tour of the intriguing Decembrists’ House Museum.
Days 13-15: Aboard the Trans-Siberian
Continue for three days along the legendary rails, traveling through taiga and steppe from Irkutsk to Moscow, the political and economic center of Russia.
Days 16-18: Moscow
Following a tour of Red Square, the Armory Museum and the Kremlin, we commemorate our journey with a celebratory toast.
