Shangri-La Express to Lhasa, Tibet
Be among the early travelers to enter Tibet's capital, Lhasa, on the highest rail line in the world. From Beijing to Golmud, where the high altitude line begins, then up the long grade to the Central Tibetan Plateau, these rail journeys lace together the far reaches of China's dominions.
Remote and for years forbidden to foreigners, Tibet is one of the world's most mysterious places. A land of immense beauty, pervasive spiritual beliefs, ancient traditions and warm-hearted people, Tibet will awe you with its vistas and impressive monasteries, and demonstrate for you a way of life vastly different than our Western lifestyle.
Choose from two different private train itineraries that include the holy city of Lhasa, perched on the high grasslands of the Tibetan Plateau. Both journeys include an inspection of the armies of Terra Cotta Warriors in Xi'an, and several days in Lhasa, City of the Sun, where we discover a culture built on reverence for life and for tradition, its beautiful temples, monasteries and public buildings a testimony to Tibetan creativity and faith.
One of the itineraries include Beijing, where we explore the classic sights, such as the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and Forbidden City. And each delivers us to Golmud, where we either board or disembark from the high-altitude train created specifically for trips on the unique rail line that carries us up and over the 16,640 foot Tangula Pass.
Beijing to Lhasa via Xi'an
Depart Beijing and spend a day touring Luoyang, one of the seven ancient capitals of China, including a visit to its fascinating historical and cultural museum. Move on to Xi'an to inspect the armies of Terra Cotta Warriors, guarding the grave of an emperor since 200 BC before reaching our final destination of Lhasa.
*This itinerary also operates along the same route in reverse.
Hong Kong to Lhasa via Southern China
See the enormous linestone pillars of the Yunnan Stone Forest and cruise the Li River among the jagged crags and caves of the limestone karst formations.
