Enter Tibet's capital, Lhasa, on the highest rail line in the world. From Beijing to Golmud, where the high altitude line begins, then up the long grade to the Central Tibetan Plateau, this rail journey laces together the far reaches of China's dominions. Walk in the rarified air of the holy city of Lhasa, pervaded with the scent of incense and yak-butter candles.

Choose from a wealth of options to add to your high-altitude Lhasa train itinerary aboard The Shangri-La Express:

Days 1-3: Beijing, board the Shangri-La Express
The trip begins with touring of the classic sights of Beijing, including the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square. On Day 3, board the train and settle in for the trip across China.

Days 4-6: Luoyang, Xi'an
First tour the Yellow River Valley city of Luoyang, an ancient capital of China, before moving on to visit the most enduring symbol of the ancient Chinese Empire - the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xi'an

Days 7-11: Golmud, Lhasa
At Golmud, board the high altitude train and enjoy the climb to the holy city of Lhasa, Tibet's capital. Upon arrival, rest and recouperate from the journey before embarking on two full days of touring around Tibet, including the Dalai Lama's summer palace and some time for bargaining at the local markets. Toast the journey at a farewell dinner before departing.

This trip also travels the same route in reverse, from Lhasa to Beijing on dates listed below.
