Tibet by Luxury Train aboard the Tangula Express
Begin in booming Beijing, visiting classic sites and experiencing unusual adventures. Board the luxury Tangula Express train for the incredible journey up the Tibetan Plateau on the acclaimed high-altitude railway. Along the way, visit Tibetan towns, villages and a sacred lake. Glide through the highest railway station on earth as you near Lhasa, City of the Sun, with its mysterious palaces and sacred monasteries. Round out the journey with a night in Xi'an, home of the Terra Cotta Warriors, and two in electrifying Shanghai.
Days 1-2: Beijing
In Beijing, visit the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace, release any travel tension you may have during a special tai chi class and attend a classical Chinese opera.
Days 3-6: Onboard the luxury Tangula Express
Board the Tangula Express, featuring elegant en suite cabins, an international chef and a scenic lounge car. Stopping in Xining, admire the massive Ta'er Monastery complex and visit Bird Island, where thousands of migratory birds lay their eggs in spring. Ascend the long grade to the huge Tibetan Plateau, home to humans for at least 11,000 years. On the way to Lhasa, enjoy platform stops near Yuzhufeng, the tallest peak in the East Kunlun Mountains; at Tangula Station, the world's highest railroad station; and near sacred Cuona Lake, where, in each Year of the Dragon (on the Tibetan calendar), thousands of pilgrims arrive to pray. Attend a Tibetan folk show in Naqu, meaning Black Water.
Days 7-9: Lhasa
Late morning arrival in the City of the Sun. Visit the
Potala Palace, seat of Tibet's government until 1950 and the Dalai Lama's Summer Palace, Norbulingka. Begun in 1740, the parks around the palace are beautiful and extensive. Explore 13th century Jokhang Temple, the most sacred site in Tibet, the surrounding Barkhor Market and Sera Monastery, a center of Tibetan learning dating from the 15th century.
Days 10-11: Xi'an
Fly to Xi'an and inspect the ranks of Terra Cotta Warriors, guarding the grave of an emperor since 200 BC. Admire the Great Mosque, founded in the 8th century, combining elements of both Islamic and Chinese architecture. Fly to Shanghai in the early evening.
Days 12-13: Shanghai
Tour some of Shanghai's fascinating sites, such as Yuyuan Garden, or "Garden of Leisurely Repose," and the City God Temple Bazaar, a large collection of small stores and booths surrounding Yuyuan Gardens. Browse the wonderful Shanghai Museum of Art and History, where thousands of years of beautiful objects are collected and visit the Children's Palace before a farewell banquet.
