Ukraine is the new borderland between Europe and Russia, a resilient region influenced by Polish princes and Lithuanian lords, by Cossack hetmen and Turkish khans, by Russian communists and by Ukrainian poets and nationalists.
Days 1-5: Lviv, Yaremche, Ivano-Frankivsk
Begin in Lviv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with architecture influenced by the Italian Renaissance. Explore the forested Carpathian Mountain region, where folk art and traditions have survived in the hidden valleys.
Days 6-7: Kiev
Fly on to Kiev, established in the 9th century. Today this modern capital on the Dnipro River is home to three million, encompassing countless architectural and artistic treasures, including the 11th century St. Sophia Cathedral. Visit the Caves Monastery, established in 1051, to find gold-domed churches and underground tunnels lined with mummified monks.
Days 8-11: Simferopol, Yalta, Sevastopol
Fly to the Crimean Peninsula and drive to the resort city of Yalta to experience firsthand, the distinguished Livadia Palace, where Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin came to their historic agreement after World War II. Celebrate Chekhov's life at his house museum and tour the venerable Massandra Winery, whose cellars guard some of the czars' favorite vintages. Explore the ruins of Chersonesus, the ancient fortress founded by Greek sailors, and the vestiges of the Crimean Tatar Khan's Palace in Bakhchysaray.
Days 12-15: Odessa, Kiev
In Odessa, Catherine the Great's naval base and strategic fort, explore the famous Potemkin Steps and the catacombs that sheltered partisans in World War II. Back in Kiev, toast the spirit and the people of modern Ukraine.
