To us, Western Russia means the brilliant onion-domed churches and gilded imperial palaces of the old empire as well as Soviet parades in Red Square, but Western Russia also possesses remote monasteries in the arctic north, resort towns on the southern Black Sea, and the humming metropolis of downtown Moscow.
