Astana

Astana has been the capital of Kazakhstan only since 1997, when President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree moving the capital from Almaty. Located in remote north central Kazakhstan on the Ishim River and surrounded by sparsely-populated steppe, Astana seemed at first a strange place for a capital city. Today its ultramodern buildings glow with technicolor lights and its flourishing economy lures energetic young people from every corner of the vast country.
