Medjugorje, once a small, peaceful village in a hilly, green region of Western Herzegovina, is now a major pilgrimage spot for Christians from all around the world. Most of its 5,000 residents are Roman Catholics of Croatian descent, and in the early 1980s six local children reported seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The six continued having visions, and many Catholics believe that they are modern “visionaries” with a special connection to God. A large cross and shrine were erected to mark the spot where the visions reportedly took place.
