Pristina is the capital of Kosovo, the Balkans territory that declared independence from Serbia in February of 2008. The population of more than 500,000 has a majority of ethnic Albanians. In existence since late Roman times, Pristina was an important Serbian capital for many years before it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in the late 14th century. Architecture and culture were strongly influenced by its years under Ottoman rule.
