Stari Ras and Sopoćani
In 1159, the town of Ras became the first capital of the Serbian Empire. Rich and influential because of its location at a crossroad of trade routes, Ras (now called Stari, or Old, Ras) saw many enduring stone monuments built in the ensuing centuries. The robust 9th-14th century fortresses, churches and monasteries of Stari Ras and Sopoćani were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979.
