Tirana

Tirana, Albania’s capital, is located 20 km from the Adriatic on the Ishm River. Since the collapse of Albania’s communist government in the early 90s, many of the grim Soviet-type buildings have been repainted in bright colors, and new restaurants and cafés are springing up. Centering on Skanderbeg Square, named in honor of the national hero responsible for defeating the Ottomans, the town is easiest to explore on foot.
