Postcard from Doug: 2014, the Year in Review

Postcard from Doug: 2014, the Year in Review

A big THANK YOU to all you intrepid travelers for spending time with us this year. Travel is as important as ever and I continue to advocate to all my friends and family – and to all of you – to get out there and see the world for yourselves. I always love hearing more about your adventures and seeing your photos, so please share and connect with us.

2014 is a year to remember for sure – for so many reasons. But I’d like to mark 2014 by sharing the following travel highlights of my own.

Spring 2014:

  • The world’s largest travel trade show in Berlin, GermanyTraveled to Berlin as an exhibitor at ITB (International Travel Berlin), the world’s largest travel trade show, where we met with buyers from around the globe.
  • MIR Directors’ Summit in Tbilisi, GeorgiaAttended our annual MIR Directors’ Summit, this year in Tbilisi, Georgia. Diplomacy is more important than ever this year as our tight-knit group of seven, representing the U.S., Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan came together for four days of sharing, discussion and planning. Amazing to have been talking about the “new cold war” in 2014: weren’t these the same conversations we were having back in the late 1980’s?

While we were in Georgia, we were treated to a wonderful Georgian Table dinner and wine tasting with good friends in the vineyard of Pheasant’s Tears in Signagi.

  • Uzbekistan’s Silk RoadI also traveled to Uzbekistan, one of MIR’s fastest growing destinations – with good reason, being at the heart of the Silk Road. Several new hotels have opened this year, road improvement projects have been completed or are near completion, and we expect more in the coming year.

  • Fine dining and meetings in Sao Paulo, BrazilVisited Sao Paulo, Brazil to represent MIR at the Brazil TravelWeek event. Took some time to visit a favela on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, and dine at D.O.M. (It was a delight to meet Chef Alex Atala who served us Amazonian ants – they were actually quite good.) It inspired us to be even more creative with our own new cuisine and culture tours.

Fall 2014:

  • A sad good-byeSeptember 27th marked the passing of my father, Stanley E Grimes Jr., who was not only a personal inspiration, he was one of the inspirations behind the start of MIR and played an instrumental role in supporting the company. He was also an intrepid traveler – not unlike many of you – and the best event organizer around.. He started me in playing volleyball at an early age, and you may know that my love of volleyball played an instrumental role in the story of how MIR got started. I miss him dearly.
