The Soon-To-Be-Discovered Republic of Georgia
In the April 7, 2016 edition of the Wall Street Journal, writer Tara Isabella Burton asks the intriguing question, “Is the Country of Georgia the Next Great Wine Destination?”
And MIR answers, “Well, yes, actually.” We’ve been in love with Georgia for years, creating a specialized food, wine and culture tour (A Taste of Georgia) that scours the country in search of its deepest and richest natural wines, its most erudite winemakers, and its finest, most fantastic food – to go along with the wine, of course.
Wine was meant to accompany food, says vigneron and MIR host John Wurdeman, who founded the wonderful Pheasant’s Tears winery and restaurant. His full-bodied natural wines, fermented and aged in traditional clay vessels called qvevri, can stand up to the robust flavors of Georgian cuisine.
“I definitely have an affinity for Georgia – it speaks to me in a way that is hard to describe. It has everything I look for in a trip: architecture, food, landscape, people, music, wine and a fascinating history…a window into a culture that is rich in life (food, plants, animals, music, wine, village, community) if not in material riches.”
We like to call the country of Georgia an “as-yet undiscovered little gem.” But that’s about to change. Georgia’s many virtues will be broadcast to the world soon, via celebrated chef, author and traveler, Anthony Bourdain.
