Travel Your Way: A Book of Tips from an Independent Traveler

MIR traveler Bob Bauer has some tips for you. A whole book full of them, as a matter of fact. Bob likes to travel on his own when he can, with as little help from his friends as he can get away with. In his 2015 book, Travel Your Way, he passes on his knowledge about how to travel as independently as possible.

He describes the way he prepares for a trip, beginning with deciding on a destination and researching it online. He likes to use Trip Advisor to pick hotels and decide on the most important sights to see in each town on his itinerary. He gets his own air tickets, using his air miles to upgrade to First Class for long overseas flights. (“Totally worth it,” he says.)

When You Need a Little HelpBob doesn’t use a Tour Operator to help with his independent travel unless he really needs one, as he did in 2007, for his 29-day trip around the world that included a journey across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railway. He figured that while planning such a complicated trip through complicated places, he might benefit from some insider knowledge.

His friend suggested MIR, and he was pleased from his first phone call.

“Their representative was available and very responsive throughout the planning phase. It should be noted here that MIR offered a capability that is quite rare in the travel industry – the willingness and expertise to design trips for individuals or couples traveling with private guides and drivers throughout Eastern Europe and into Asia. This expertise was invaluable in putting this trip together.”

After several rounds of back and forth collaborative planning, Bob and his MIR travel specialist came up with a personalized itinerary that included a week in Poland, a week in St. Petersburg and Moscow, a 13-day rail journey by private train from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and several days in Seoul, Korea to wind it up.

It’s About TrustA veteran traveler, Bob is picky about what companies he deals with. What is important to him is trust.

“For me, when I apply the word trust to someone or to an organization it simply means consistent action over time. When I expect [them] to do something, it gets done. If they say something will occur, it does happen…If a mistake is made, they correct it as quickly as possible, without an argument or a bunch of excuses…They genuinely are concerned about providing me with a quality travel product that meets my needs and interests, at a reasonable cost.”

MIR filled the bill for Bob Bauer.
