Europe’s Little Darling

Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast shares the beauty of the Greek coast. In the capital, Zagreb, some of the grandeur of Belle Époque Vienna remains, while the coast inherited that laid-back, life-loving Italian feel. Underlying these eclectic influences is a framework of fabulous Roman ruins, more than a thousand lovely islands and some of the best beaches in Europe. Don’t miss this one.

Our Favorite Places in Croatia

Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, meaning “village of oak,” seems to grow out of a walled peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia. The original oak dwellings have long since burned, however, and for hundreds of years the town has been a rock fortress. Its rugged stone walls have protected it from attack from the sea since the 6th century. Dubrovnik has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, its simple limestone buildings with their warm yellow and red roof tiles unified by a medieval building code.
Dubrovnik has been under attack by armies and by earthquakes many times, but careful restoration work has been a hallmark of the city ever since it was severely damaged in a 1667 earthquake. More recently, the Institute for the Restoration of Dubrovnik was founded in 1979 after another earthquake. This entity – with the help of donations from around the world – is responsible for restoring the city after the 1991 shelling by the Serbs. It was impossible, however, to match the color of the original tiles, since the original tile factory shut down in the 1950s.

Split
Split, the largest town on the Dalmatian Coast, grew up around Diocletian’s Palace. In the 3rd century, Roman Emperor Diocletian built a palace in Split, and, after abdicating his throne in 305, retired here for the rest of his days. Today the palace ensemble remains as the center of the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Plitvice Lakes National Park
Plitvice Lakes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the country's biggest attraction outside of the Adriatic Coast. The park consists of a series of waterfalls connecting 16 beautiful lakes. The park is furnished with wooden footbridges from which one can view its lakes, waterfalls, caves, blossoming meadows, and even a gorge that resembles the Grand Canyon.
