New Europe’s Newest Playground

Halfway between the Adriatic and the Black Sea, Serbia encompasses gentle valleys, roughhewn mountains, venerable Roman bastions and an irresistible capital city, Belgrade. Sadly, Serbia is a place where even the youngest adult has a personal experience of war and subsequent healing. But the whole country is moving towards acceptance of its past and eventual acceptance into the European Community.

Our Favorite Places in Serbia

Belgrade
Belgrade is the capital of Serbia, as it was the capital of a united Yugoslavia. The area around Belgrade supported human life as far back as Neolithic times. In the 1st century BC the Romans made it a border outpost, calling it Singidunum. Strategically located on the Danube, Singidunum became the starting point of the important Via Militaris road, and was the home of a Roman garrison for many years.
From then until the present day, Belgrade has been destroyed and rebuilt between 30 and 40 times, by conquerors like Attila the Hun, the Visigoths, the Magyars and the Turks. The Slavs first appeared in the 7th century, and managed to persist through all the later dynasties. Today Belgrade is a dynamic and sophisticated city of 1.7 million, swiftly becoming one of the hippest places in Europe.

Stari Ras and Sopoćani
In 1159, the town of Ras became the first capital of the Serbian Empire. Rich and influential because of its location at a crossroad of trade routes, Ras (now called Stari, or Old, Ras) saw many enduring stone monuments built in the ensuing centuries. The robust 9th-14th century fortresses, churches and monasteries of Stari Ras and Sopoćani were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979.

Gamzigrad-Romuliana
Located in the eastern part of Serbia, Gamzigrad-Romuliana (Palace of Galerius) is an impressively preserved Roman fortification dating from the late 3rd century. In addition to the ruins of the palace itself, the complex includes the remnants of baths, temples, hot springs and several meticulously arranged tiled mosaics and statues in relief. A fine example of the Roman influence in the Balkans in the time of Galerius, the site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007.
